Our Services

Functional Medicine

At St. Johns Wellness, functional medicine is a more comprehensive way of understanding what may be affecting how you feel. Rather than treating symptoms one at a time, we look at the systems behind them: hormones, thyroid, metabolism, nutrient status, inflammation, gut health, genetics, and more.

The goal is simple: go beyond treating symptoms and understand what may be driving them. Through a detailed history, advanced testing when appropriate, and a personalized plan that’s adjusted over time, our board-certified nurse practitioner helps you get to the root of what’s holding you back, especially when standard labs say everything is “normal.”

What We Evaluate:
A Closer Look at Your Health

What We Evaluate

Standard labs answer a narrow set of questions. Functional medicine asks more. Depending on your history and symptoms, we may evaluate any of the following, choosing tests based on what’s likely to be useful for you, not a fixed panel.

Hormones & Metabolism

Nutrients & Genetics

Inflammation & Risk

Gut, Stress & Recovery

Our Approach

How Functional Medicine Works

This isn’t a single visit and a prescription. It’s a process, and each step builds on the last.

01

History & symptoms

We start with a detailed conversation about how you feel, how long it’s been going on, and what’s already been tried. Your story is the most important piece of information we have.

02

Advanced testing

Based on your history, we may order testing that looks beyond a standard panel. We choose tests that are likely to change your plan, and explain what we’re looking for before anything is ordered.

03

Comprehensive evaluation

We review your results alongside your symptoms and history, looking for patterns and connections between systems rather than isolated numbers on a page.

04

Personalized plan

You’ll receive a clear plan built around your results and your life. It may include nutrition, targeted supplementation, hormone or medication support, sleep and stress strategies, or a combination.

05

Follow-up

We check in regularly to see what’s working and what isn’t. Progress isn’t always linear, and follow-up is where the real gains happen.

06

Adjustments over time

As your body responds, your plan evolves. We refine, retest when needed, and keep moving toward the goal: feeling like yourself again, and staying there.

Who This May Be For

Is Functional Medicine Right for You?

Many of the symptoms that bring people to us are easy to dismiss as stress, age, or “just how things are.” Often they’re signs that something in the body is out of balance, and worth a closer look.

You may benefit from a more comprehensive evaluation if you’re experiencing:

If you’ve been told your labs are “normal” but you still don’t feel well, that’s exactly the situation functional medicine is designed for.

Our goal is to understand your results, not to write a prescription for every complaint. Treatment follows the evidence, whatever that turns out to be.

FAQs

Good to know before you book

Primary care is built to diagnose and treat specific conditions, usually within a short visit. Functional medicine takes a wider, slower view: it looks at how your hormones, metabolism, gut, nutrient status, inflammation, and genetics interact, and asks what may be driving your symptoms rather than only naming them. At St. Johns Wellness, the two work side by side. You can use functional medicine on its own or alongside our direct primary care.

No. Functional medicine complements the care you already receive. Many patients keep their existing primary care provider or specialists and use our evaluation to fill in the gaps. With your permission, we’re happy to share results and coordinate with your other providers.

That depends on your history and symptoms. We may look at hormone and thyroid function, metabolic markers and insulin resistance, micronutrient levels, inflammation and cardiovascular risk, gut health, genetics and methylation, heavy metals, mold exposure, and more. We only recommend testing that’s likely to change your plan, and we explain what each test is for.

Testing is billed separately, either through the lab directly or through our office, depending on the test. Some standard labs may be covered by insurance; many advanced panels are not. We’ll tell you the cost of each recommended test before you decide, so there are no surprises.

Not by default. Recommendations follow your results, not a standard protocol. For some patients that means targeted supplementation; for others it’s hormone support, changes to nutrition and sleep, or a combination. If medication is the right tool, we’ll say so. If it isn’t, we won’t prescribe it just to prescribe something.

Yes, and this is one of the most common reasons people come to us. A result can fall within the standard range and still not be optimal for you. We look at your numbers in context, alongside your symptoms and history, and often find patterns that a single routine panel would miss.
